Tata (CInI)’s ‘Lakhpati Kisan’ initiative to improve livelihoods of tribal communities

Transforming Tribal Households By Empowering Women-led FPOs with TATA's Lakhpati Kisan: Smart Villages Collectives for Integrated Livelihood Initiatives (CInI)

Collectives for Integrated Livelihood Initiatives (CInI) is an associate organization of Tata Trusts. CInI envisioned to transform the lives of rural-tribal communities in Central India. Its ‘Mission 2020: Lakhpati Kisan’ works to improve rural-tribal livelihoods in the Indian states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Jharkhand. It targeted to make 101,000 tribal households ‘lakhpatis’ sustainably and ensure that each household earns Rs 120,000 per annum.

TATA CInI’s challenges

The primary roadblocks to achieving this transformation were:

  • Manual data collection
  • Absence of digital record of farmers, their produce, and incomes
  • No visibility of the activities of the field staff
  • Lack of centralized system for advisories
  • Difficulty in monitoring the quantum of agrochemicals used by farmers

How Cropin helped

Tata CInI partnered with Cropin and leveraged its solutions to improve the livelihoods of tribal farmers. Cropin Grow (SmartFarm) digitized data collection and geotagged the plots. The centralized system provided advisories to farmers on the package of practices and climate-smart agricultural practices. It helped monitor input usage by farmers and activities of field staff. In addition, to yield estimates, it offered post-harvest management assistance and market linkages.

Impact

  • 34 Crop varieties monitored
  • 11,60,677 Acres audited
  • 23,991+ Farmers on-boarded & their profiles digitized
  • 46,711 Total plots managed on Cropin Grow (SmartFarm)
  • 31% Beneficiaries reported increased crop production
  • 38% Beneficiaries reported increased income
  • 84% Beneficiaries reported improvements in their quality of life
